President Leonel Fernandez has ordered a 15% wage increase for public school teachers starting this August and authorized the creation of 8,915 new jobs for teachers. He said he would submit a Supplementary Budget Bill for RD$4.6 billion to Congress to improve school facilities nationwide. This is in addition to the RD$5.4 billion that had originally been planned in adjustments to the budget this year. This would bring the total budget to RD$46.5 billion this year.
Education Minister Josefina Pimentel said the wage increase totals RD$1.14 billion, RD$477 million will be budgeted for the new teacher jobs and RD$2.25 billion for improvements to educational infrastructure.
The president of the Public School Teachers Association (ADP), Radhames Camacho said the increase fell short of the requested 30%.
