President Ricardo Alberto Martinelli of Panama and Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia, former President of Costa Rica Jose Figueres, 32 trade and economy ministers and more than 10 foreign affair ministers have registered to attend the Americas Competitiveness Forum V (ACF V) on 5-7 October at the Hotel Jaragua in Santo Domingo. 1,000 delegates are expected to participate, including business leaders, academics and heads of international organizations. The presidents of the Inter-American Development Bank, the secretary general of the Organization of American States and the Andean Development Corporation are also expected.
The event is being organized by the National Competitiveness Council (CNC). Chief executive Andres van der Horst Alvarez said the event would lead to the Declaration of Santo Domingo that will cover 10 competitiveness principles. The plan is for it to be accepted by a consensus during the Summit of the Americas set for Cartagena, Colombia in 2012.
The event is held to identify and compare the best practices for competitiveness and regional productiveness.
"After the crisis of 2008 we had forgotten we have to work to strengthen our competitiveness. I think this is a good opportunity, because we will be responsible for saying what we need to continue strengthening our competitiveness, but we will also have the opportunity to say if we have done the important things needed to improve competitiveness," he said, as reported in El Caribe.
Van der Horst was speaking in the presence of Humberto Cristian Perez of the European Union and Domingo Jimenez, the European Union Funds Coordinator for the Dominican Republic. Perez said the European Union was focusing on structural problems of competitiveness in the DR. He mentioned one specific program to create a quality system working with the CNC.
Jimenez said that the EU has defined a program to support capacity building, executed with 5.9 million euros with the CNC and has defined a broader program to support the implementation of National Plan for Systemic Competitiveness, for 22.9 million euros until 2013. The first disbursements are programmed for 2012. "We are committed to backing an improvement in quality so that producers can improve their acceptance in international markets."
The event has the support of the European Union Delegation in the Dominican Republic and the Office of the National Representative of the European Development Funds.
