The governmental Emergency Operations Center (COE) reports that 37,743 people had to be evacuated and 88 communities were incommunicado in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. Three deaths were reported, two in San Cristobal and one in the east. One of the victims was Salvador Nova Carvajal, 40, who was killed when his home in Cambita Garabito, San Cristobal collapsed. Last night people were still being evacuated in San Cristobal, Azua, Santo Domingo, Bonao and Monte Plata. The COE said that 24 provinces remain on red alert and another three are on yellow alert.

Communities that were cut off by land are located in El Seibo (Sabana de la Mar, El Llano, Arroyo Grande, La Cuchilla y Caciquillo), Monte Plata (Yabacao), San Pedro de Macoris (near Ramon Santana), Duarte (Los Contreras, Peynado y Juana Rodriguez), Santo Domingo West (Manoguayabo), and San Cristobal (23 different areas).

Senator Carlos Castillo of San Jose de Ocoa said that continuing rains over 20 hours has left access roads in a critical condition.
