Puerto Rico defeated the DR in the first game of the Tuto Marchand Cup. The Cup is a warm-up series that matches Canada, Brazil, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The teams are preparing to compete in the FIBA Americas 2011 Championship in Argentina, a crucial London Olympics qualifier. The winner and runner-up get a slot in the Olympics.
The DR lost 99-77 to Puerto Rico yesterday in the Brazilian tournament.
The Brazilian tournament will help Coach Calipari decide who will play what in the FIBA Championship 30 August-11 September in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Three active players in the NBA are on the Dominican Roster, namely Charlie Villanueva, Francisco Garcia and Al Horford.
Team general manager Eduardo Najri announced that Juan Pablo Montas and Eloy Vargas were being dropped from the team.
The Dominican team roster is now: Al Horford, Charlie Villanueva, Edgar Sosa, Eulis Baez, Francisco Garcia, Jack Michael Martinez, Kelvin Pena, Luis Flores, Manuel Fortuna, Manuel Guzman, Orlando Sanchez, Ricardo Soliver and Ronald Ramon.
According to news reports, in the game against Puerto Rico, a consistent offensive rotation accompanied by a good defensive perimeter from Puerto Rico had the Dominicans on their toes.
As reported, University of Kentucky coach John Calipari's Dominican squad was not able to play the faster up-tempo game he had prepared for the tournament. The defense in the half court and the rapid transition of the Puerto Ricans forced the Dominicans to take shots in the middle and long distance, exposing their greatest weakness.
Moreover, Coach Cal reported: "The difference in the game came down to shooting as Puerto Rico hit 54.8 percent of its shots in comparison to the Dominican Republic's 39.3-percent mark."
The DR's next game is on Thursday against Brazil at 8:15pm ET. Brazil defeated Canada 88-70 on Wednesday.
