Civil Defense director is back

President Leonel Fernandez has re-appointed retired General Luis Antonio Luna Paulino to his previous job as Civil Defense director. With the onset of the peak months of the hurricane season, his removal was met with much criticism in the media and social networks. President Fernandez repealed decree 506-11 where he had appointed Admiral Jose Lorenzo Pena Garcia as Luna's replacement. Luna Paulino keeps his duties as Civil Defense director, a position that he has held for many years. The repeal is contained in Decree 516-11, which assigns new functions to Lorenzo Garcia. Luna Paulino's dismissal, that had been rumored and was latter confirmed by the new decree, had caused a great deal of controversy due to the acknowledged professional leadership he showed at the helm of the Civil Defense volunteer group in the DR and during the Haiti earthquake.
