Spaniard Pablo Garcia Fanjul, who was killed yesterday by unknown assailants in the E. Leon Jimenes Park in Santiago, had been arrested on 22 February 2002 by the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) for possession of six kilos of cocaine. He was subsequently deported to Spain in 2004 after serving a short sentence in the DR. Spokesman for the Central Cibao Police Regional Directorate Lt. Col. Antonio Calvo said that Garcia was thought to be hiding from the international authorities and from people who he had allegedly cheated. The Police spokesman said the caps and bullets found in the victim's body would be analyzed to determine if they could be linked to other murders.
Garcia Fanjul was gunned down by individuals who were traveling in a vehicle when he was walking near the park by E. Leon Jimenes. Police are investigating whether the murder could be linked to a settlement of accounts associated with the criminal underworld, mainly drug trafficking.
