On Sunday it was made official. Danilo Medina Sanchez is the presidential candidate for the ruling PLD party. During his proclamation ceremony held at the Palacio de los Deportes, the PLD Delegates Assembly formalized the results of the PLD primary. Medina had won the primary on 26 June with 907,017 votes or 87%.

President Leonel Fernandez, who is president of the PLD, swore in Medina, and at the end wished him "e pa lante que vamos," the old slogan that took him to power in 2004. This is the second time that Medina will run for President. In 2004 he lost to today PRD presidential candidate, Hipolito Medina.

In his acceptance speech, Medina stressed that jokes are not enough, a dig at his rival, former President Hipolito Mejia, best known for his wisecracks. "The country is not a joke, it is the most serious thing we have." He promised to create 400,000 jobs by making a pact with foreign investors, entrepreneurs, businesspeople, community associations and workers. He said it was the time to distribute wealth and share economic growth.

"Today what is needed are prudent leaders who are daring, intelligent, sensitive, understanding, democratic, but who can act decisively and honestly," he said. He called for the PLD government to have the humility to recognize what has not been achieved and especially where it has been negligent and wrong, as reported in Hoy.

Hoy makes the point that First Lady Margarita Cedeno, who has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate, did not attend the event. Medina was accompanied by his wife Candy Montilla and their three daughters.
