The DR landed a close win against Canada (64-62) in the tune-up tournament, the Tuto Marchand Cup. The Marchand Cup marks the final exhibition games for Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico and the DR as they will now head down to Mar Del Plata, Argentina for the 2011 FIBA Americas pre-Olympic qualifier. Two berths in the London games are on the line in Argentina, and the teams that place third, fourth and fifth at the 10-team tournament in Mar del Plata, Argentina are given berths in a last-chance event next summer. Argentina is the favorite to win one of the berths, leaving another for all the other contenders.
The DR men basketball team has trained under Coach John Calipari of the University of Kentucky for the event.
