The Superintendent of Banks and the Agricultural Bank said yesterday that the call made to rice growers in Sanchez Ramirez province by PRD presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia was harmful, dangerous and unfortunate. Mejia urged farmers not to pay the debts contracted with the state financial agency with the promise that if and when elected he would pardon the debts. Haivanhoe NG Cortinas, the Superintendent of Banks and Rafael Medina, the Deputy Administrator and acting Administrator of the Agricultural Bank, told Diario Libre that they were surprised by the former President's call to the farmers, which incited them not to honor the commitments that they had contracted.

During a press conference held at the Superintendent of Banks headquarters, both officials warned that this promise could have two negative impacts: It would reduce liquidity from the Agricultural Bank and would affect the bank's performance indexes, like the delinquency rate in its credit portfolio as well as exposing the bank to greater systemic risks.
