At least 108 people have died violently in the province of Santiago so far this year, including 24 men executed in several locations around the city, and this is worrying the business and social sectors. The latest case involves the murder of a bus driver, Kelvin Antonio Rodriguez Rosario, who was intercepted by his killers when he was traveling together with his brother in the sector of La Yaguita de Pastor. His relatives attribute the death to conflicts over several urban transport routes. According to Diario Libre, the statistics of the Volunteer for Public Safety in Santiago (Voses), show that these deaths are linked to executions described as "settling of accounts", events linked to relationships, and exchanges of gunfire. Recently four men from South America were executed in a rented house in the exclusive neighborhood of Los Cerros de Gurabo. Other victims have lost their lives during assaults, armed robberies and fights, as well as suicides and other criminal acts.

The Voses report indicates that in the first six months of the present year, the rate of violent deaths has increased by 4% in relation to 2010.The report says that 65% of violent deaths reported in the first semester of 2011 involved firearms, as confirmed by the autopsies on the victims, and 19% of these deaths were caused by stab wounds and 16% were killed by rocks, sticks, rope and poison.
