National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) agents have halted the transshipment of two tons of cocaine from South America to Europe via Dominican ports in less than a year, as reported in Diario Libre. The drug cartels have been trying to send drugs on cargo ships that load in Dominican ports. These shipments have been confiscated from containers passing through the Haina and Multimodal ports in Santo Domingo and at the country's international airports. The drugs seized have a street value of EUR600 million, when taking into account that in Europe a kilo of cocaine sells for EUR150,000.

As reported, the authorities see a trend towards changing from shipments to the US to Europe. As speculated, it could be because new US controls are in place, or that the market price is better for dealers in Europe.
