President Leonel Fernandez has authorized the Minister of Hacienda to cut checks for nearly 4,000 creditors of the government whose accounts payable do not go beyond the one million-peso level. According to Hoy reporter Adalberto de la Rosa the government began paying off part of the administrative debt of some RD$7 billion during a visit by Fernandez to the Ministry of Hacienda. Minister Daniel Toribio said that by means of Law 193-11 the Ministry of Hacienda was authorized to emit bonds for RD$7 billion and use the money to pay the administrative debts. He said that first the ministry was going to pay penalties like the arrears that some institutions have in paying their employees, and then they are going to pay debts of up to five million pesos to individuals and companies that provide goods and services to the government. Later on, the government will start paying contractors and suppliers with pending collections of between five and twenty million.
