The Ministry of Education has authorized just 166 of a total of 1,675 private schools to keep their increased tuition rates. These increases range from RD$50 to RD$17,900 and were applied as of this 2011-2012 school year. The authorities also approved the documentation of the investments and expenses that backed up the increases.

The Ministry told Diario Libre that they had also rejected increases for 884 of these schools because they did not submit the necessary documentation. The readjustments made by the private schools include those of regular and bilingual educational curriculum. The major portion of the increases was for the pre-school level, the Primary level occupies the second level and the Secondary level was third with the lowest percentage of increase. Private school owners and directors justified the increases basically in investments and expenses like salary increases for teachers and administrative personnel, social security payments, increases in the cost of services and materials, accumulated inflation, the purchase of new furniture and equipment, as well as the repair, expansion and maintenance of the school premises.

The great majority of schools that increased their tuition for the new school year belong to Region 15 of Santo Domingo, with 54 schools, Region 06 of La Vega with 42, and Region 11 of Puerto Plata with 29. The report on the private schools tuition increases presented by the director of Private Educational Institutions states that of 1,675 schools registered as recognized and accredited all over the country, 791 complied with the National Educational Council (CNE) requisites and of these 625 did not increase the monthly payments. The authorities ordered moreover that the private educational centers that are in the process of obtaining recognition or accreditation, which did not send in the documentation with the proper justification, will maintain their status during the 2011-2012 school year, but will not receive either recognition or accreditation for the year.
