Writing in El Caribe, lawyer Marisol Vicens states that the DR authorities need to recognize that there is a security problem in the country before they can begin to take effective steps to resolve the issue. In her op-ed contribution she comments that the authorities are in denial. "Nobody can boast that all is fine by comparing the relatively low crime statistics here to other countries in the region. First because we are comparing ourselves to what we do not want to become, and second because if the plague is not cured in time, it will encompass all," she writes. She says the cases of Mexico, Colombia and New York are there for all to see.

"We continue with our streets that are the faithful expression of violation of the law, with one ways and stop lights that no one respects, of motorcycles and vehicles without license plates, and of abandonment by the authorities when it comes patrolling, a situation that is the best stewing pot for crime, as the theory of the broken window has proven," she writes.

She complains that the authorities, inside their SUVs with darkened windows, see nothing, as they move around with bodyguards, and as far as they are concerned only certain categories of citizens deserve protection.

"Because of that, society needs to firmly demand that the authorities guarantee security, to see if we can get the authorities to wake up and confront this evil, for while it is serious now, it could get worse."
