Hurricane Katia, passing well to the north of the Dominican Republic, is nonetheless expected to cause high surf along the north coast, mainly Samana, Cabrera, Playa Grande and Puerto Plata as it makes it way north into the Atlantic. The storm is packing maximum winds of 160 kilometers per hour and stronger gusts as it moves to the area of the Bermudas. Katia will not directly affect the DR, but weather forecasters alert there could be waves of up to 10 feet on the north coast. Swimmers, sailors and boaters should remain in port.
