Senator Euclides Sanchez (PLD-La Vega), who chairs the Senate Public Works Commission, complained that public works projects built during the administration of current Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua show rapid decline. He attributed this to lack of supervision and said they represent a waste of public funds.
As reported in Hoy, the congressman said that the technical base at the Ministry of Public Works has been lost and there is no transparency. The monthly budget allocations are no longer published. He added that furthermore, the roads deteriorate rapidly because there is no maintenance.
Sanchez also complained that the Ministry of Public Works is receiving monthly allotments that are distributed among a privileged group of 10 to 15 large contractors. He said many large engineering firms are not receiving contract work and delays in payment have strangled medium to small-sized engineering firms.
