UN High Commissioner to visit DR and Haiti

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, will be visiting the Dominican Republic and Haiti this week in order to gain firsthand knowledge about the projects that the UNHCR is implementing in both countries. The local representative for the UN agency, Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, said that between 1,500 and 2,000 Haitian refugees were under the care of the program. He said that these were people who fled their country "during particularly difficult times." The UN High Commissioner for Refugees ceased having a permanent representative in the country in 1997, but they re-opened an office in Santo Domingo after the 2010 earthquake.
