The Dominican authorities deported Frenchman Thierry Andres Eugene Barde last night. Barde, who made the headlines last Thursday when he killed an alleged armed robber in the Piantini section of the capital, is accused of drug trafficking in France.

Air France Flight 3563 to Paris was delayed and the authorities kept Barde in a room in the terminal building until the plane's arrival. Barde traveled in the company of several Interpol agents on the commercial flight filled with passengers who watched with surprise as he was led, handcuffed, onto the plane.

Barde, 48, was sent to France despite having a charge pending against him in the Dominican Republic for the killing of the alleged thief on 1 September. A judge had ordered his release from custody on the condition that he could not leave the country while investigations into the death of the supposed assailant were still under way. The District Attorney for the National District, Alejandro Moscoso Segarra, said that the French authorities had confirmed that drug trafficking charges were pending against Barde. The Frenchman, who had a Dominican residency card, had been living in the tourist community of Las Terrenas for several months.
