While Hurricane Katia does not represent much danger for the Dominican Republic, the shift in the winds from the southeast to the north and northeast will bring high surf but mostly some welcome relief from the hot weather that most of the country has been experiencing. Katia, briefly a Category 4 hurricane and now "just" a Category 3 storm, continues on its northwest track, several hundred kilometers to the north of the Dominican Republic. Only abnormal waves and some showers along the north and northeast coastline are expected to affect the country. In the meantime the National Meteorological Office (Onamet) is forecasting some showers in the central mountains, in Bahoruco, in Neiba and the southwest region. Onamet said that they are now paying close attention to a large low-pressure system located some 800 kilometers to the southwest of the Cape Verde Islands that has some potential to develop into a tropical cyclone.

According to the National Hurricane Center website:

"Early visible satellite images indicate that the shower activity associated with a low-pressure area centered about 680 miles west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde islands is gradually becoming better organized... and a tropical depression could form later today or Wednesday. This system is expected to move toward the west or west-northwest at about 15mph and has a high chance... 70 percent... of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.
