President Leonel Fernandez received the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Antonio Guterres, a former prime minister of Portugal, at the Presidential Palace yesterday. The UNHCR, regarded as one of the world's foremost humanitarian organizations, is preparing a ministerial-level meeting of all member states of the United Nations, to mark the 60th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention and the 50th anniversary of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. The meeting will be held in Geneva 7-8 December 2011.
UNHCR has won the Nobel Peace Prize on two occasions. Its more than 7,190 staff members work in 123 countries providing protection and assistance to millions of refugees, returnees, internally displaced people and stateless persons. UNHCR's needs-based budget for 2011 is US$3.32 billion.
