Former President Hipolito Mejia, the front-runner in polls in the lead-up to the 2012 presidential election, was the first to sign the Political and Social Pledge for Education in the Dominican Republic at the Santo Domingo Catholic University today.

The Commitment, organized by the Coalicion por una Educacion Digna, sought to commit presidential candidates to give priority to education in the 2012-2016 term. The commitment obliges the new administration to allocate 4% of the GDP to education, as established by law.

"I have signed this pledge with great pleasure," said Mejia, as reported in El Dia. He said that regardless of the crisis the country might be going through, I pledge to meet this commitment."

The pledge was scheduled for signing from 9am to 4pm by the eight presidential candidates in the 20 May 2012 election. They are Hipolito Mejia (PRD), Danilo Medina (PLD), Eduardo Estrella (Dominicanos por el Cambio - DxC), Julian Serulle (Frente Amplio), Guillermo Moreno (Alianza Pais), Pelegrin Castillo (Fuerza Nacional Progresista), Max Puig (Alianza por la Democracia) and Jose Miguel Soto Jimenez (Partido V Republica).
