A private business group in the Colonial City, the Fundacion Ciudad Ovando, has funded the installation of 63 surveillance cameras. Interior & Police Minister Jose Ramon Fadul said the cameras and the monitoring center would bolster security in the historical quarter, the leading attraction for visitors to Santo Domingo. Louis Brocker, spokesman for the Fundacion Ciudad Ovando, said the installation is part of a move that seeks to convert the Colonial City into the main tourism area of the Dominican Republic, as reported in Diario Libre.

The monitoring service is backed by an increase in motorized and foot police patrols in the Colonial City.

The Colonial City is the prime pedestrian area in the city of Santo Domingo. Its main attractions are the many bars, restaurants, shops and cultural points that are all within walking distance. The move seeks to ensure the security of pedestrians.
