With crime in the Dominican Republic at its highest ever levels and rising, President Leonel Fernandez announced that a panel has been set up to discuss what to do and called on people from all walks of life to attend. Speaking at the formal inauguration of a vocational school in Santiago and a housing project in La Barranquita yesterday, President Leonel Fernandez called for all sectors of Santiago and the Cibao to participate in debates at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) university in Santiago. He will attend the deliberations on crime in the Cibao to look into measures to strengthen prevention and citizen security, as reported in Listin Diario.

Fernandez said that Armed Forces Minister Joaquin Virgilio Perez Feliz, Police chief Jose Polanco Gomez, Northern Region Police Commander Francisco Romer Lopez, National Drug Control Department president Rolando Rosado Mateo, Presidential drug advisor Marino Vinicio Castillo and others would be attending the talks.

"I am convening everyone so that on Saturday we can specifically analyze the situation in Santiago and the Cibao to propose measures to resolve the situation and guarantee greater citizen security in Santiago and the Cibao," he said. Discussions will start at 11am.

The talks are taking place at a time when security issues are on everyone's mind in the Dominican Republic, as drug trafficking, government impunity and social exclusion have opened the doors to rising crime.
