The National Business Council (CONEP) says that the results of the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Index 2011-2012, where the DR slides from 101st place on a list of 139 countries to 110th out of 142 are a cause for concern, as reported in Hoy. Conep called for a national commitment to revert those results.

"It is necessary, as we have been insisting on changing the country's economic model to bring about the changes to respond to the needed structural changes to improve competitiveness, create formal jobs and promote development of exports to sustain economic growth," said Conep in an official statement.

Conep called for ending corruption and wasteful government spending, which are detriments to doing business.

"The problems indicated in the report, such as quality of education, favoritism in government decisions, problems with government efficiency, in security and credibility of the police, as well as deficient quality of power service, low savings and low innovation have been stressed on many occasions as issues to be resolved," said the Conep.

Conep called for the change to an economic model where exports of goods and services are given priority, based on productive sectors and that stimulates formal jobs, which would create real progress and strengthen national productive sectors.
