Power plant specialist Wartsila has been awarded a turnkey EUR155m contract by Barrick Gold to supply a gas-fired power plant for a project in the Dominican Republic. The combined cycle power plant will provide electricity for the Pueblo Viejo gold mine.
The Finnish company will supply 12 Wartsila 50DF engine units in combined cycle. These are dual use and can run both on liquid fuels and on natural gas. The power plants can be optimized for different outputs in the 100 to 500 MW range and each engine is equipped with a waste heat recovery steam generator.
Wartsila already has a presence in the Dominican Republic with 900 MW of installed generating capacity in the country, representing around half of the country's active electrical capacity.
