For years, when friends and relatives were lost at sea, volunteer yachtsmen and pilots volunteered their own time and funds to help in the rescue efforts. Recently, the volunteers have organized themselves into the Dominican Naval Auxiliary Corps and now they seek a legal framework for their activities that were recognized in the US Coast Guard annual assembly this year.
The Dominican Naval Auxiliary Corps (AND) is a civilian force that possesses its own resources to assist in search operations, rescue and environmental protection. It was created by Presidential Decree 887-09 and is composed of a group of businesspeople and professional volunteers, in a major exercise of corporate social responsibility and citizen solidarity.
The organization operates private boats, barges and aircraft made available to the Navy, in order to assist with non-military activities or public order and safety at sea.
AND is now requesting that Congress approve a bill aimed at formalizing the activities of the corps so that they are in a better position to assist the Navy in the search and rescue of people at sea, protect the environment, maritime security and carry out other operations. The bill was sent to the Senate by the Presidency in August.
National Commodore for the AND Jose Antonio Najri and Vice Commodore Freddy Reyes expressed their appreciation for the bill that seeks to boost search and rescue operations.
AND said that operating jointly with the Navy, it rescued 75 people from sea last year and so far this year members have sailed 9,000 miles under orders and carried out 280 flight hours.
