On her TV show over the weekend, investigative journalist Nuria Piera revealed that a RD$4 million a month program intended to provide breakfast to 4,000 policemen working in the 103 sectors where the Barrio Seguro (Safe Barrio) program is implemented is rife with irregularities, as reported in El Caribe. She said the untendered contract was granted to a company that the Department of Taxes (DGII) lists as a company that organizes social and artistic events. The program is funded by the Presidency of the Republic. When Nuria Piera interviewed Nubia Estrella Mencia of M y N Fiestas y Decoraciones, she was not sure how many policemen benefitted from the program, mentioning more than 4,000, then 2,800, then 2,600.

Nuria Piera revealed the reality is that the number of rations is nearer 774, or an average of 45 to 150 per police station. She also revealed that the cost of producing the breakfast is minimal, because the company uses the governmental Police Institute of Social Security (Isspol) cold room, power and transport.
