The Last Survivors conservation project has just released an infomercial in English and Spanish to promote awareness for the need to preserve two rare species of land mammals that still roam Dominican forests.

Jose Nunez-Mino, field project manager for the Hispaniola Endemic Land Mammals Project encourages involvement in the initiative to spread the word so that more people in the Dominican Republic can be on the lookout to ensure the protection of endangered species.

Scientists say that before humans arrived, around 120 species of land mammal (excluding bats) lived in the Caribbean region, but many have now gone extinct, some very recently, with possibly only 15 surviving today. Of these, two are the Hispaniolan solenodon and the Hispaniolan hutia. A Darwin Initiative-funded project was launched in the Dominican Republic in October, a collaborative effort between Dominican UK partners, led by the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. Its goal is to conduct field research on these little known species to assess their status, identify their conservation needs, to develop monitoring tools and to plan their long-term conservation.
