In an attempt to keep cell phones out of the nation's prisons and jails, the government will import specially trained dogs from the United States in order to sniff out and find and seize any cell phones in the 37 prisons facilities. The Attorney General of the Republic, Radhames Jimenez Pena, made the announcement yesterday, according to El Caribe. In order to keep inmates from using cell phones that they might obtain illegally later on, the authorities will also install blocking equipment to prevent cell phone transmissions from the prisons. This will be done in coordination with the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel), said Jimenez Pena after meeting with the Chief of Police, Major General Jose Armando Polanco Gomez, the chief of staff of the National Army, Major General Pedro Antonio Caceres Chestaro, the director general of Prisons, Roberto Obando Prestol, the director of the National Intelligence Department (DNI), Ramon Antonio Aquino Garcia and the head of Indotel, David Perez. These measures come about after President Fernandez criticized the ease with which prisoners communicate and coordinate their criminal activities from jail, including contract killings.
