Truckers close highway

This morning, more than 400 heavy vehicles, dump trucks, tractor-trailers and container trucks halted all traffic on the Joaquin Balaguer Highway between Santiago and Navarrete in demand of some RD$60 million pesos from the government. The truckers told El Caribe reporters that the money is owed for services provided to several institutions responsible for the construction of state public works projects. Despite a military presence the protest lasted for more than five hours and the truckers said that if the government does not come up with the money, they would extend their protest actions. One of the truckers was wounded when a furious driver, caught in the traffic snarl started shooting at the protesters before fleeing.
