After more than 20 days without drinking water, services are slowly getting back to normal in several parts of Greater Santo Domingo, which according to the Water and Sewer Corporation of Santo Domingo (CAASD), comes after a series of 19-hour days of hard work. Caasd director Perez, speaking at a press conference in the Orlando Martinez Room of the National Palace, said that they managed to repair the damage to the pipelines that bring water from the Valdesia aqueduct system, and were damaged by the flooding of the Arroyo Boca de Mana during hurricane Irene. He told Diario Libre reporters how the Caasd technicians managed to repair some 15 meters of the 67-inch steel pipeline. One of the national papers said that there were some issues with the remaining repairs due to the late arrival of an excavator, but this was expected to be resolved later today. According to Perez, the institution is now supplying 382 million gallons of water according "to a program and by sectors" which is sufficient to replace the deficit of 150 million gallons that was caused by the damage to the pipeline. "Today we are supplying all the water required by Greater Santo Domingo, but this supply is by sector," he said, making it clear that drinking water would continue to be supplied every two days of the week from 5am to 5pm.
