On Saturday the nation will celebrate National Beach Cleanup Day, and try to clean up the 184 beaches and some of the riverbanks in the Dominican Republic. The event is being sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment, the Center for Agricultural and Forestry Development (Cedaf), and the Vida Azul Foundation, and will include thousands of volunteers who will collect garbage from beaches, coastal areas and rivers all over the country. The activity will take place next Saturday 17 September as part of International Coastal Cleanup Day aimed at cleaning up the areas and teaching people not to throw garbage in the streets or in places where it can get into a river and then into the sea.

Dominican open waters swimmer Marcos Diaz announced that he would do a 26km swim from Sosua Beach to the Malecon in the city of Puerto Plata in the Atlantic on the occasion of the Beach Clean Up Day. Marcos Diaz is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Program.
