French company Vinci has been granted the contracts to design and build systems for wastewater collection, transfer and treatment in Montecristi, Neiba, Azua, San Jose de Ocoa and San Cristobal. This project, which is part of the Dominican government's cholera eradication program, will benefit 200,000 people in its first phase.

Vinci, through its subsidiary Vinci Construction Grands Projects signed the EUR108- million contract with the governmental INAPA (National Potable Water and Sewage System).

The contract will be funded through EUR78.5 provided by the Emerging Country Reserve fund and EUR29.5 million in local financing. The project involves laying approximately 500 kms of pipes and the design and construction of eight treatment plants with population equivalent capacities ranging from 4,000 to 60,000 as well as six lifting and pumping stations. The works will take 42 months to complete.

These facilities comply with sustainable development criteria: simple operation, environmental protection and high-quality treatment. For example, final disinfection will take place in an ultraviolet radiation facility and its power will be supplied by photovoltaic panels, which cover 80% of overall energy requirements.
