The death of 51 policemen over the last 10 months at the hands of criminals has orphaned more than 100 children, according to the Officers Wives Association. According to the group, a total of 217 officers and men of the National Police have been wounded in some 95 robberies and clashes. As part of the introduction to the program "I extend my hands," Teresa Welosky, the wife of the Deputy Chief, General Victor Campusano, told El Caribe reporters that children becoming orphaned is now one of the most serious consequences of the "crime and delinquency wave in the Dominican Republic". She said that the "I extend my hands" program was an attempt to protect and look after the families of officers and men who have been killed in the line of duty. Another program provides wheelchairs for members of the force who have suffered permanent injuries.
