PRSC dissident Eduardo Estrella is officially the presidential candidate for the minority political party, Dominicans for Change (Dominicanos por el Cambio). He was declared the candidate at a ceremony held by the party on Saturday. Estrella said that the PRD and PLD candidates have already had their chance, and that it's time for a change that only he can bring.

In his speech to hundreds of delegates from around the country, the political leader announced specific actions, in contrast with the more vague offerings of the majority contenders. He promised to create 100,000 jobs each year but also to reduce the VAT tax from 16% to 10%, and gradually reduce company taxable benefits from the present 29% to 25 percent, as reported in Hoy. He also pledged to introduce a greater range of exemptions for income tax on individuals, reducing it to 15 percent for wages under 100,000 pesos. He pledged to establish a zero rate for agricultural production, to meet the 4% of GDP for education, reduce levels of violence, strengthen agricultural production and promote an amendment to the hydrocarbons law to prevent the increasing "abuse" of fuel price rises every week.

"We take on the defense of the environment and are committed to reviewing the contract with Barrick Gold, where state interests are properly secured," he said.

The assembly of delegates granted Eduardo Estrella the freedom to choose his running mate, as well as to coordinate the partnerships he deems necessary to obtain power from May next year.

The political leader called on the main candidates Hipolito Mejia and Danilo Medina to participate in a public debate for people to see for themselves who is the best choice to lead the country's destiny.
