The defending champion, the DR was only able to earn the silver medal after losing the 6th NORCECA Championship to the US national volleyball team. The 6th Norceca Women's Continental Championship ended with the US victory 25-15, 25-23, 25-18 in Caguas, Puerto Rico. The DR, nevertheless, secured entry into the FIVB World Cup, the first 2012 Olympic Games qualifying event. Based on its No. 13 ranking to start the 2011 season, Dominican Republic also qualified for the World Cup as the African Confederation does not have a team ranked higher than the NORCECA vice champions. During the event, Bethania Cruz was voted the most valuable player. The team's next most important event is the FIVB World Cup in Japan, from 4-17 November. The Dominican team performance was affected by several injured players.
Earlier this year the DR defeated the US at the Pan American Cup in the semifinal round. The DR is ranked 12th in the world.
