President Leonel Fernandez has been awarded the Global Women and Children's Health Award by South-South News. Upon receiving the award, Fernandez highlighted his government's efforts to benefit women and children and how family health coverage has been expanded.
He says the initiatives have contributed to a substantial reduction of maternal and child mortality, as reported by the Presidency.
Fernandez received the award at a ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. The award is sponsored by the government of Antigua and Barbuda, the International Telecommunications Union and the Economic Commission of the United Nations for Africa.
South-South News said the award was delivered for the Fernandez government implementing the use of technology in the country's sanitary system, using electronic registration procedures.
