The Ministry of Public Health reported yesterday that it has spent around RD$900 million this year on medications to cover the free treatment of a total of 5,671 patients suffering from catastrophic, high-cost illnesses in this country. Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez told Listin Diario reporters that the beneficiaries are people on very low incomes and that they receive the medicines through the Protected Program of High Cost Catastrophic Illnesses that the ministry operates. He said that thousands of people across the country with chronic illnesses are receiving this free care. He noted that next year the program would be extended to include even more people.
