The National Police announced the arrest of several members of a gang that has killed several foreigners in Santiago over recent weeks. During a chilling press conference covered by the nation's media, the Chief of Police, the head of the DNCD and the District Attorney for Santiago presented the case against a series of contract killers who murdered five foreigners in Santiago last month. Describing the murderers with nicknames such as "the Monster", "La Melaza", "el Indio" and "Nelo", the authorities mentioned links to three drug cartels: the Cibao Cartel based in Santiago, the Valle del Norte cartel from Colombia and the Sinaloa cartel from Mexico.
Police chief, Major General Jose Armando Polanco Gomez said that these killers have murdered nine people over the last 18 months. He added that the foreigners were killed because the group of Venezuelans and Colombians tried to avoid paying for a 600kg cocaine consignment that "the Monster" had delivered to them. The motive for all five deaths in Santiago was drugs and money. Ballistics tests proved that a Glock automatic taken from one of the alleged killers was the same weapon used to kill the four South Americans as well as the Spanish citizen. Some of the killings were paid for in cocaine and the killing of the Spaniard was carried out for RD$400,000.
