President Leonel Fernandez, in New York for the 66th General Assembly of the United Nations, met with President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos who backed Fernandez's global initiative for futures markets to curb speculation in food and fuel, the Presidency website reports.

Santos said he would support the bill when it is presented at the meeting of the group of countries belonging to Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC). Fernandez and Santos met in the framework of the 66th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) that opened this morning. The meeting began with speeches by the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, US President Barack Obama, and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.

On the President's schedule for today: At 1:15pm, Fernandez was scheduled to attend the official lunch hosted by the UN Secretary General for the Heads of State and delegations, in the Visitors' Lobby of the General Assembly building. At 3pm, bilateral meeting with the President of Equatorial Guinea, Obiang Ngema at the UN headquarters. At 7pm, President Fernandez will attend a reception hosted by President and Mrs. Obama.
