The Judicial Branch disciplinary council has announced the firing of Judge Francisco Mejia Agomas in San Cristobal for serious errors in the exercise of his duty. Among other cases, Mejia Angomas made headlines for the release of a man sentenced for drug trafficking because the judgment did not specify if it was 10 years or months. Nevertheless, the type of crime committed only warranted sentences of 10 years. But Mejia Angomas released the prisoner because he had already served 10 months in jail. As reported in El Caribe, Mejia Angomas is a member of the entire San Cristobal jurisdiction that is under scrutiny for several instances of lenient sentencing.

President of the Supreme Court of Justice Jorge Subero Isa says that in the vote on the case, two judges Francisco Arias Valera and Elias Santini withheld their votes. The Council decision bans Mejia Angomas from exercising any public position for five years. Subero Isa said that the Judicial Inspector Office has been entrusted to investigate the claims of irregularities and corruption at the Court of Appeals in San Cristobal.
