The latest tragedy to shock the nation involves 32-year old Angeli Rivera and her three children, who were killed when her spouse, 28-year old Romilio Frias locked himself up with his family in their house and poured gasoline to set the house on fire in Veron, La Altagracia in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Frias is reported to have committed this crime in a fit of jealousy. One of the children was able to escape the blaze, but died in the bathroom from smoke inhalation. As reported in El Caribe, Angeli had dealt with her violent partner by taking refuge in religion, in the hope that he would change. Only one of her children was Frias' biological child. The authorities suspect Frias could have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
