After declaring the legislation to be urgent, the Senate passed a bill that increases the number of judges on the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) from 16 to 17 after two consecutive readings. Senate president Reinaldo Pared Perez explained the reason is that a member of the Supreme Court of Justice is on the National Judicial Council and thus will be unable to take part in any of the court's decisions. Therefore, the President decided to increase the number of judges to 17, as reported in El Caribe.
