A traditional staple in Dominican backyards, mangoes have become an economically and socially important product for the country because of the hard currency that the crop generates through exports and the labor it employs. Mangos, the DR's third largest fruit crop after bananas and avocados, are exported to far-flung countries like Japan, the UK and the Netherlands. The increase in worldwide consumption is attributed to the increased awareness of healthy eating in recent years.

Land used for mango cultivation in the DR has increased from 26,000 tareas (around 1600 hectares) in 2003 to some 50,000 tareas today (over 3000 hectares). The Mango Cluster, which started with 17 members, now has over 600, and there are four producer associations in the main production areas in Azua, Peravia, San Cristobal and San Juan de la Maguana. The country's mango crop is worth over RD$300 million a year.
