The murder of lieutenant colonel Cesar Augusto Ubri Bocio brings crime closer to home for the Police force. El Dia says that the murder has exposed the illegal but highly lucrative business of part pilfering that operates with the authorities turning a blind eye.

On Sunday, 18 September, Ubri was murdered. He is suspected to have been the victim of a network that stole vehicles to be dismantled and sold as car parts. Car vehicle repair shops purchase the parts for legitimate repairs. As reported, the going price for a stolen vehicle for dismantling is RD$70-90,000 from the car thieves, while this can produce RD$600,000 for the chop shop. When one of their own was hit, the Police revealed the operation of one shop, which news reports now indicate is one of too many.

Part shops interviewed by Hoy says that the illegal shops affect their business. They say they import the parts from abroad for resale here.
