Sandy Filpo, president of the Santiago Commerce and Industry Association, has told El Caribe that while there are more patrols in a general sense making society feel more secure and for real changes to happen, purges need to be made in the police. He called for the creation of a specialized police force with better wages.

Angelina Villaman, representing the Southern Zone Neighborhood Defense Association (Comite de Defensa Barrial Zona Sur) said that the effectiveness of the measures has yet to be felt. "Nothing much has changed," she told El Caribe. She said that there are criminals within the ranks of the police and called for a purge. Raquel Rivera, representative of the Women's Coordination Committee (Coordinadora del Mujeres) said that violence and crime will not decline as a result of a presidential speech, but when this is accompanied by actions and above all there is the attitude and political will of the higher ups that take decisions. "The problem is that they only treat the consequences, not the causes. She says it is all propaganda, and there is a double standard because those who should be part of the solution, in most cases are part of the problem. "Everyone knows where the drug distribution points are in Santiago, who collects tolls and meanwhile the government organizations spend their time telling the population they are carrying out operations in the barrios, attacking the problem by the branches, not the roots."
