The head of the Central Electoral Board, Roberto Rosario, announced that the JCE would not prosecute the baseball pitcher known as Leo Nunez of the Florida Marlins. Nunez, whose real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo, had been working in baseball for nearly a decade before the discovery of his false identity. He, himself, came out with the revelation due to a promise he made his dying father to reveal his real name. Nunez/Oviedo placed himself voluntarily in the hands of Dominican justice and the JCE. Rosario said that he would protect the baseball player who had his name replaced with the name of another man who was a year younger, when he was a teenager. Rosario said as long as Oviedo told him about who provided the false papers he would be fine. Rosario pointed out that there were several points of falsifying public documents in this case, including birth certificates and passports.

In a follow-up article in Listin Diario, the newspaper reports that the Judge for Permanent Attention of the National District sent the person accused of switching the identity of Juan Carlos Oviedo and Leo Nunez to preventive custody in La Vega. Keila Perez Santana, the judge, told reporters that Hector Bienvenido Pena Diaz was arrested in his house in La Vega by a deputy prosecutor accompanied by a police escort. She added that evidence was found which incriminated the person in the falsification of the identity of Leo Nunez/Juan Carlos Oviedo.
