Today's Listin Diario editorial urges the Dominican Law Association to apply penalties to the membership that includes 7,000 lawyers allegedly using fake cedulas, or identity cards, according to Diego Jose Garcia, president of the organization. The editorial stresses that these people should be taken to court, and the Central Electoral Board (JCE) must launch a detailed investigation to establish how they were issued these cards and to identify the accomplices within the organization. "The announcement that there is such a large number of forged identification documents being used by lawyers in the exercise is an indication of how vulnerable the ID issuing system is, despite the controls that the JCE has established to reduce fraud," writes the newspaper.
Ines Aizpun of Diario Libre, in another editorial, recalls that last year Garcia had denounced the fact that there were 3,000 lawyers with fake identity cards in his organization, but there is no record of anything being done to expel them or publish the names of the individuals concerned. She says the only way to defend the rights of citizens is to publish the full list of the 7,000 delinquents who are using lawyers' robes.
