Residents of Licey al Medio and some parts of Moca are up in arms over the prolonged blackouts and the failure to repair the roads in their areas. They began a series of violent demonstrations yesterday, burning tires, tearing down trees and scattering refuse across the streets to block traffic.
According to El Caribe reporter Miguel Ponce, the demonstrations began at 5am, blocking traffic from the west into the province of Espaillat. The protests took hundreds of people by surprise, forcing them to walk around the debris in order to get to their destinations. From Las Palomas to Canta la Rana the roads were blocked off in protest at the blackouts but also in demand for road repairs and the construction of several new roads that are needed.
