Classes have been suspended for a second day running at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD). The president of the university's Federation of Professors' Associations, Ismael Peralta, said that the government has not responded to their request for a 15% salary rise, increased per diems and other demands.

UASD rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet said that as the university authority, he is willing to speak to the professors, but he does not have any solutions at hand. Both Peralta and other professors who were consulted by Diario Libre believed that the loss of 48 hours of classes was justified by the greater need for better conditions for the teachers. Tomorrow, during an assembly, they will decide on their next steps.

A few students on campus who not know about the strike or wanted to do some homework said they were worried about the amount of postponed classes as a result of the work stoppage. The administrative offices of the university also joined the stoppage.

A UASD press release announced a report by the Department of Administrative Accounting saying that during the first seven months of the present administration, only 39 new employees have entered the institution, which added to the 36 professors who were contracted, has increased the payroll by RD$12,550,466. The rector reiterated that his administration has exercised transparent management.
